The kora is a beautiful instrument - a calabash, cow skin, and mahogany harp of 21 strings that holds the history of the Mandinka culture. Kora is passed generation through generation in the Griot class - the history keepers.
If you choose to study kora while in the Gambia, you will be studying under the Jobarteh family (known as Diabate in Mali, Senegal, and other French speaking countries). You will have a master teacher work with you at your residence, and can also choose to travel up country to smaller towns and villages where there are large populations of Jalis.
Now you can learn kora from some of the masters of the instrument.
