The People and Culture of the Gambia

On our study abroad trips to the Gambia, West Africa there are many things to be learned other than the specific art forms that we focus on. While the drumming, dance, and artwork of the country and region are very important parts of the culture, the culture itself is well worth taking the time to immerse yourself in.

The languages, the food, and the customs of the local people are unique and amazing in many ways. Some people wish to travel to the Gambia without specific study plans, but simply to learn about the place and the people.

With our program, you will be housed with local people, you will be shown the way that life is - not a tourist representation.

During your stay in the Gambia, on top of lessons and programs that you will be undertaking at the school, you can also arrange excursions to Banjul and Up Country to visit cultural sites such as the Bakou Crocodile Pools, the Abuko Nature Reserves, Magasutu Nature Reserve, James Island, and the Stone Circles in Wassu. There are also evening events with local musicians and dancers.

The best way to learn about Gambia is to go there. The second best way is to talk to one of our past students, who can fully explain what the experience entails. Simply contact us, and one of our previous students will contact you with more information.
